I can't find my nonprofit!

Selflessly | I can't find my nonprofit!

You have a donation just burning a hole in your pocket and you log into Selflessly..... and can't find your organization. BUMMER, right??

Selflessly pulls regular updates from the United States Internal Revenue Service and the Canadian Revenue Agency. This way, we can give you all of the verified organizations and make giving much easier. However, there are several reasons that cause us a bit of a headache for the platform.

Reasons why I cannot find my nonprofit:

  1. The organization operates under a different name than what is listed within the government. For example, Joy's House in Indianapolis, Indiana is listed with the IRS as TMP Enterprises.
  2. The organization is a chapter, member, extension, of a larger organization. We see this often with churches and large charities that may share an Employer Identification Number (EIN). So if you use our location filters, there is a chance the headquarters is in another city or even State.
  3. The organization is a grassroots group and may be operating under another nonprofit. We call this a Fiscal Agent, and may not be recognized by the government yet.
  4. Mercury is in retrograde. This is currently out of scope for Selflessly however, it is in our product roadmap to figure out someday.

What should I do if I can't find my nonprofit?

Awesome question. Selflessly is happy to help! You can use the chat to let us know and please provide us with as much information as you have on the nonprofit.

Things that help us with the investigation are:

  • Organization Name
  • EIN or Registration Number (THIS HELPS US TONS!)
  • Address or website
  • Contact information

Submit what you can and one of our support team members will get to work!  We'll let you know the status of our search and update you once it has been loaded into the system or if we are unable to verify the organization for whatever reason.

Also - you can always use a third-party search. We recommend Charity Navigator in the US or the Canadian Revenue Agency's website.
